As bloggers, we savor interior design events! And how could we not? They are a marvelous opportunity for people in the industry to get together, learn from each other’;s experiences and take a sneak peek at tomorrow’;s trendy creations for the home. With these in mind, we decided to inform all designers, architects and enthusiastic bystanders out there regarding the upcoming major design events in 2014. So here they are, ordered by date: the Globe’;s most vibrant, interactive and famous gatherings you should be a part of in the year to come!
#1. IMM Cologne: 13-19 January in Cologne, Germany
Create. Furnish, Live is the official slogan of the IMM Cologne fair taking place in January 2014 and officially welcoming a new year of surprising designs. The organizers will be expecting renowned international exhibitors and decision-making professionals from all over the world (more than 1,100 companies from 50 countries). Don’;t miss out on a series of exhibitions, trend events, guided tours and special-interest meetings. The massive furnishing show is a chance for visitors to stay in touch with the latest trends in interior design, “from the basics all the way to designer items and luxury furnishings“.
#2. MAISON&OBJET: 24-28 January in Paris, France
With a design history dating back to 1995, MAISON&OBJET will once again host the major players of the industry in January 2014. With professionals coming together from all over the Globe to share their experiences, taking part in the many events organized within this edition will guarantee your own experience gain. No less than 260 900 square meters will be dedicated to the world of home interior, the show hosting 5400 exhibitors and awaiting more than 150 000 visitors. From decoration ideas, furniture objects, accessories and fabrics to children’;s pieces and tableware. this is an event mixing together business inspiration and creativity. MAISON&OBJET will take place again in Paris (5-9 September, 2014) and in Singapore (10-13 March 2014).
#3. Stockholm Design Week: 3-9 February in Stockholm, Sweden
As you probably know by now, attending Stockholm Design Week also means access to the exciting new products at Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair, Being in Stockholm at the beginning of February will allow you to walk the beautiful streets of Stockholm, get a glimpse of the Swedish architecture and witness more than sixty design events held around the city in connection with the annual fair. Known as the world’s largest meeting place for Scandinavian furniture and lighting design, Stockholm Design Week is an event that gathers “new products, new materials, new knowledge, new trends, new business, new contacts and new environmental and technological solutions displayed in a both informative and inspirational manner“.
#4. Design Indaba Expo: 28 February – 2 March in Cape Town, South Africa
Held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, Design Indaba Expo is slowly becoming one of the biggest curated design event in the Southern Hemisphere with more than 30 000 visitors each year. The event was envisioned as a “dynamic platform for designers and creative businesses to showcase their wares and market themselves to the general public and industry buyers“. This is not just a place where one can observe the latest trends in interior and industrial design. Visitors here can attend events in the fields of advertising, craft, fashion, new media, publishing, visual art and jewellery design.
#5. Design Days Dubai: 17-21 March in Dubai, The United Arab Emirates
The opulent city of Dubai will once again be home to the leading fair in the Middle East and South Asia dedicated to collectible and limited edition furniture and design objects. Design Days Dubai will welcome from international designers to exhibit their creations and share their ideas with the thousands of visitors. This is your chance to mingle with the best of the best, gather inspiration and feel the pulse of the city. The organizers announced that the fair will also involve a non-commercial program consisting of various workshops, modern art installations and live performances.
#6. DesignMarch: 27-30 March in Reykjavik, Iceland
The blossoming Icelandic design stage will be open to the public worldwide next year at the end of March. DesignMarch will be held in Reykjavik, Iceland for the fifth time and the organizers anticipate an event to remember: “From fashion to furniture, architecture to food design, the festival showcases the best of the local design scene alongside exciting international names, opening with DesignTalks, a day of lectures by internationally acclaimed designers and the foremost local design thinkers“. With more than 150 events is various design venues, the most northerly capital will be converted into a dynamic destination for learning through experimenting.
#7. Light + Building: 30 March- 4 April in Frankfurt am Main, Germany
Known as the World’;s biggest trade fair for lighting and building, this major gathering in Frankfurt am Main, Germany has around 2300 exhibitors each year and over 196,000 visitors from outside Germany alone. Light + Building is the place to be if you are interested in the evolution of the relationship between people and light, as well as in smart powered buildings and intelligent sustainability.
#8. Milan Furniture Fair: 8-13 April in Milan, Italy
Milan Furniture Fair has a history dating back to 1961, when the Salone del Mobile first opened its doors to promote Italian furniture and furnishing accessories for the export market. The 2013 edition of the event gathered 285,698 trade operators (more than half of them participating from different countries), over 38,000 members of the general public and 6,578 members of the press. Visiting the city during the furniture fair in the beginning of April will grant you the chance to see a vibrant Milan, with many decorated streets and interesting exhibition venues throughout. It goes without saying you should book your hotel weeks in advance.
#9. International Contemporary Furniture Fair: 17-20 May in New York, USA
Held at the New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, the 26th annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) will “lure those in determined pursuit of design’s timely truths and latest trends to an encyclopedic exhibition of up-to-the-moment offerings, as well as a series of fascinating, fun, edifying programs, and a packed schedule of exhibits and features.” In 2013, the event gathered 570 exhibitors from 31 countries, promoting their work in furniture, carpet and flooring, lighting, materials, wall coverings, accessories, textiles, kitchen and bathroom.
#10. The Russian Interior Show: 20-24 May in Moscow, Russia
Rooms Moscow / MIFS also known as The Russian Interior Show is a major event delivered for the Russian and Eastern European design jugglers. It is addressed to all furniture producers and suppliers worldwide seeking access to the Russian market and to all visitors who would love to see Moscow in an innovative light. The fair is at its second edition and welcomes guests to discover creative home and office furniture, kitchen and appliances, bath and outdoor solutions.
#11. Clerkenwell Design Week: 20-22 May in London, UK
Entering its 5th year in 2014, Clerkenwell Design Week London is an independent design festival aiming at gathering together leading UK and international brands in a series of showroom events, pop-up exhibitions and special installations. Boasting over 60 showrooms, a wealth of creative businesses and “more architects per square mile than anywhere else on the planet“, the event is dynamic and triggers involvement. Local resident design showrooms (including high-end contract furniture, lighting, kitchen and bathroom brands) also take part in the fair.
#12. Belgrade Design Week: 25 May – 1 June in Belgrade, Serbia
The Serbian capital will be the center of the European design scene, starting at the end of May. Belgrade Design Week built its reputation on talks and presentations from leading architects and designers. The enthusiasm of the small team of organizers behind the BDW with almost no state support is what makes the event truly special: “It’;s completely privately run, and it’;s completely one-to-one in its relationships – it’;s kind of like a family affair, where everybody is instantly local upon arrival, rather than a business affair like Milan or the London Design Festival,” stated BDW chairman Jovan Jelovac.
#13. DMY International Design Festival: 28 May – 1 June in Berlin, Germany
The 12th edition of DMY International Design Festival aims at converting the historic Berlin Tempelhof airport into an unforgettable design venue. For anyone choosing to celebrate the beginning of summer in Berlin, DMY will be the stage for various design happenings, such as conferences, workshops and night events: “Participants and visitors will be given an opportunity to get involved into the big picture, to learn and share ideas and, last but not least, to present their work“, the organizers asserted.
#14. Design Month Graz: 30 April – 1 June in Graz, Austria
Reaching its 6th edition, Design Month Graz is organized in collaboration with a cluster of organizations, enterprises, institutions, museums, festivals, galleries and shops. The event highlights on the importance of the creative industries in Austria. In 2013, more than 75 000 visitors attended the fair, being actively present at exhibitions, various discussions and conferences.
#15. Paris Design Week: 8-14 September in Paris, France
Over 100 000 visitors attended Paris Design Week in September 2013, an event where visitors can enjoy quality design exhibitions, cocktail parties, encounters and innovations. Last year offered some interesting thematic itineraries through Paris, based on themes such as Art & Design, Design Digital, Design & Architecture. Paris Design Week will again closely follow interior fair Maison et Object. M&O also happens in Paris in January (24th to 28th Jan 2014) and in Singapore in March (10th to 13th Mar 2014).
#16. Furniture China: 10-14 September in Shanghai, China
The 5 day exhibitions at Furniture China in Shanghai are known for promoting design creativity not just in Asia, but all over the world. Besides the key Chinese furniture players, around 292 overseas companies participated as exhibitors in 2013, including pavilions from France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sweden and Thailand. From what it seems, this event is not just an opportunity to exchange design ideas, but a cultural experience altogether.
#17. London Design Festival: 13-21 September in London, UK
London will take center stage in the world of design again in mid-September, when hundreds of events are expected to light up the creative skies of the city. According to the organizers, the London Design Festival was conceived by Sir John Sorrell and Ben Evans: “Building on London’;s existing design activity, their concept was to create an annual event that would promote the city’;s creativity, drawing in the country’;s greatest thinkers, practitioners, retailers and educators to a deliver an unmissable celebration of design“. Important trade shows like 100% Design and Decorex are also associated with the festival.
#18. Biennale Interieur: 17-26 October in Kortrijk, Belgium
Design as both a commercial and cultural entity is a concept that stood at the basis of this event held every two years in Kortrijk, Belgium: “Since 1968, the Biennale Interieur is internationally recognized as the only event in its kind to balance the need for commercial performance with the significance of a convivial cultural happening. The Biennale Interieur has become an important meeting place to experience trends, tastes, avant-garde and movements that define design today“. 84 000 visitors are expected in 2014- mostly professionals and design enthusiasts from France, The Netherlands and Germany.
#19. Dutch Design Week: October in Eindhoven, the Netherlands
During Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, guests can witness smart solutions and inventive design, shaping up the future trends in the industry. Here is an open invite from the organizers: Starting October, “the doors are open to the future in a city that for 9 full days is buzzing with innovation and creative energy. Get inspired by the latest work of more than 2,000 designers, meet the designers and experience the beauty and power of Dutch design“. Last year, the event gathered 250 000 participants.
#20. Design Miami/: 3-7 December, Miami, USA
In celebration of design culture and commerce, Design Miami/ gathers the most influential collectors, designers, curators and critics from around the world under one major event: “Design Miami/ is more than a marketplace for design. Each show balances exclusive commercial opportunities with progressive cultural programming, creating exciting collaborations with designers and design institutions, architecture, art and fashion, and unique commissions from the world’s top emerging and established designers and architects“. The event is also held in Basel, Switzerland each June.
